What We Believe

We are politically moderate and progressive Mormons. While we each have our own unique background and points of view, we are unanimous in our commitment to these five ideals. Please consider them, and then add your own signature to the pledge using the form on the right. Stand up for the values you cherish!

1. We follow the Constitution and promote its vitality.

Our nation’s founders were wise and dedicated, and we honor and respect them by maintaining the vitality of their crowning achievement — the U.S. Constitution. The founders intentionally created a Constitution that protects rights and liberties but is still flexible enough that it can be applied to the unique problems of our generation and those that follow. This means that, in addition to the enlightened work of the founders, we can also benefit from the inspired progress of American society after the founding. We are proudly connected to the past, but our progress is not constrained by it.

2. We protect individual rights and liberties.

The grandest achievement of the U.S. Constitution is its strong protections for individual rights and liberties. Since the Constitution was adopted in 1787, these freedoms have gradually become available to more Americans, without regard to race, gender, social status, or creed. We continue this tradition by working on behalf of those who cannot yet enjoy all of the freedoms that America offers.

3. We respect others, and we keep an open mind.

Civility is essential in an open society. We respect others, even when we disagree with them. We avoid personal attacks and vitriol because such tactics do not belong in the type of communities that we want to live in. We keep our minds open. We are willing to modify our opinions as our knowledge and understanding expands. We expect that others will exhibit similar respect, civility, and open minds with regard to our opinions and ideas.

4. We support efforts that strengthen families.

Our driving motivation is to help Utah’s families succeed. We love and cherish our families, and we want to strengthen them. Because we know that no two families are alike, we refrain from passing judgment on others. We strengthen families by promoting policies that help them have safe neighborhoods, adequate financial resources, essential medical care, and access to education and other community resources. We take our stewardship over the natural world seriously, and we ensure that development and recreational activities are undertaken responsibly so that our families can live in a healthy environment. Sometimes we can accomplish these goals by getting out of people’s way, and at other times we must actively step in to help, but always with the objective of helping Utah’s families succeed.

5. We build prosperous communities that are welcoming to all of Utah’s people.

We believe that Utah ought to be a welcoming and safe place for each of its nearly three million people. Some Utahns are first-generation Americans who came to our state as refugees; others came seeking economic or recreational opportunities. Many of us are descendants of the courageous pioneers who trekked to Utah seeking a refuge from religious persecution. We respect this diversity and support efforts that allow Utahns to be entrepreneurial and industrious. We resist efforts that alienate and demonize groups of our people. Utah is a big place, in both geography and spirit, and there is plenty of room for us all.
